Lycoming College announced Oct. 26 that it has pledged to support voter registration and informed voting among eligible students at its Williamsport campus, according to the college. President Chip Edmonds signed ALL IN’s Higher Education Presidents’ Commitment to Full Student Voter Participation, joining more than 780 college presidents and chancellors nationwide, the announcement said.
The college said the pledge was made ahead of Pennsylvania’s Oct. 19 voter registration deadline. Students in Lycoming’s Civic Engagement course organized multiple voter registration drives before the midterm election and registered 41 people, according to the announcement.
The course, led by Angela Kurtz, a sociology lecturer, combined academic work with service learning focused on community needs, civic engagement and social inequality, the college said. Edmonds said the commitment reflects the role of civic participation in a liberal arts education and the college’s aim to help students become informed, engaged citizens.
